Fun Family Projects for Celebrating the New Year! (And the One That is Ending)

newyears_large.jpgParty dresses, sparkling lights, and holiday music...celebrating over the holidays can be truly wonderful, and it can also be very taxing on little ones (and their parents).  New Years Eve is the perfect time to sit back and reflect on all the wonderful holiday memories and everything your family has accomplished throughout the past year.

Why not take this opportunity to organize all the great photos on your cameras and computers, and compile a "Year in Review" for your family!

Whether you are using an online scrapbooking tool (like smilebox.com) or are creating an actual scrapbook - have the kids pick their favourite memories and create a page or two.

Another great way to capture time is to have everyone write a letter or draw a picture and talk about their year (and plans for the year ahead) .  It's a great way to keep the celebrations alive in their hearts and year-after-year it creates a nice tradition, reading back over holidays past.

Another great way to mark time is by the creation of a family time capsule. Sand off and spray an old cookie tin, use a Tupperware container or even an old shoe box. Have every family member place favourite mementos inside, and open again in 5 -10 years.

A few suggestions for things to put inside:

-       Family photographs

-       Report card

-       Your family pet's favourite toy or tags

-       A family newsletter: be sure to treat with acid free paper preserver

-       Newspaper articles - recent headlines

-       Play our Holiday Story Maker activity as a family - at the end you'll have a homemade story with photos!

Happy New Year to you and your family and all the best for 2012!
