Search for Dorothy

Judy Garland's portrayal of Dorothy in the classic 1939 film is one of the most iconic performances of all time.

But what does a modern-day Dorothy look like? We need someone who can redefine the role and make it her own.

So what are we looking for?

Dorothy is a teenager who wants to break free from her life and see the world.  She needs to be feisty, spirited and funny.

Our Dorothy must have a spectacular voice. She needs to master the song 'Over the Rainbow' - which is no easy task. This famous song is the ultimate test of a performer's vocal abilities. It's often used in auditions to separate the good from the great.  And of course there's the dancing and acting bit too!

Andrew Lloyd Webber expects that the role of Dorothy will change somebody's life.

Our journey started the first week of June, with regional auditions across the country.

For the remainder of the summer our esteemed panel of judges and Andrew Lloyd Webber himself will whittle down the hopefuls until only ten remain.

Those ten will be put through their paces when Over the Rainbow goes live on CBC TV in September, for eight jam-packed, toe-tapping, music-filled weeks of competition.

Each week, Canada will weigh in via online vote, until one Dorothy is left standing.

That lucky girl will take on the lead role in The Wizard of Oz, starting December 2012.
