Over the Rainbow Wrap Up - Episode 1
They came. They sang. They danced.
Over the Rainbow premiered last night with a bang! Our first hour saw the journey our girls took from the auditions across Canada, then we met the 100 girls who made the callbacks in Toronto. Dorothy Farm followed: a gruelling musical boot camp that climaxed in the biggest audition of the competition, with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Arlene Phillips, at The Lords own estate in Barbados.
In the second hour, the show swung into high gear. Our Top 10 hit the stage live in front of a packed house and lit up televisions across the nation.
We kicked off Follow the Yellow Brick Road, featuring our Dorothys in their very best gingham (kudos here to costume Designer, Lee Kinoshita-Bevington).
Calgary's Kelsey Verzotti stepped up to the plate first with her version of Good Morning Baltimore from the musical Hairspray. 16-year-old Julia Gartha followed Kelsey, singing Make You Feel My Love by Adele. The judges were impressed with both girls and it set the tone for the entire evening.
Next up was London, Ontario's Cassandra Hodgins, who captivated the audience with a smoldering performance of Fever by Peggy Lee. Charlottetown's Michelle Bouey followed, with a smooth and intimate version of Love Song by Sarah Bareilles.
20-year-old Danielle Wade gave a touching performance of I'll Never Fall In Love Again by Dionne Warwick and Jessie Munro impressed judges with grace and maturity singing Take That Look Off Your Face from the musical Tell Me on a Sunday.
Coquitlam's Jennifer Gillis then took the stage, taking on Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic Whistle Down the Wind from the musical of the same name, managing to impress the judges and The Lord himself. Winnipeg's Colleen Furlan went new school with a fun and soulful rendition of Fallin' by Alicia Keys.
Then Ottawa's Stephanie La Rochelle channeled her inner Miley Cyrus with The Climb and AJ Bridel closed out the show by singing a little Mambo Italiano by Rosemary Clooney (if you were playing along with the App you would have learned that Rosemary Clooney is George Clooney's Aunt!)
It was a great night all around, and the girls were riding on a high after their performances. Our Dorothys finally got the chance to let off a little steam after the show, mingling with the audience and getting reacquainted with family members. Top 20 members Malindi Ayienga, Lia Luz and Rebecca Codas were in attendance too, offering their support to the Top 10.
But it's not all fun and games. Tonight one girl will have to hang up her gingham and hit the yellow brick road back home. Voting is now closed, and the fate of one of our dynamite Dorothys hangs in the balance. Who will it be?
Find out during our live results show tonight at 8PM/8:30PM NT on CBC.
