Normally, a bio is supposed to be a chronology of
one's life. Bah.
I'd rather write up a moment in my life that sums
up how I got where I am.
I used to pretend to be a biologist. I say pretend,
because I don't think I was very good at it. I mean,
I could burst into the field, collect data, crunch
numbers and spend endless hours looking through a
microscope. But it kinda all fell apart at the writing
stage. Imagine, "The temporal seperation of sexual
function in Butomus Umbellaceae..."
So I knew a career change was imminent.
The hint came when I was working in a stinky bog
counting little pink flowers. It was a brutally hot
Sunday morning in late August. I was up to my chest
in rubber hip waders and floating plant sewage. Bullfrogs,
water snakes and lots of bugs.
I'm listening to CBC Radio - The Sunday Edition.
Michael Enright is talking to three people about....
the mango. Correct - fruit.
But here's the thing. It was fascinating!
The mango happens to be my favourite fruit. But I
would've never figured someone could talk about it
for 15 minutes!
I was sold.
I bought myself a one-way ticket to CBC Radio.
