Arctic Winter Games: Olympics of the North
Intermediate
Latitude is a measurement that tells you how far north or
south a place is on the Earth. The equator, for example, has
a latitude of zero degrees while the latitude of Sydney, Australia,
is 34 degrees south. In Ottawa the latitude is approximately
45 degrees north. And, if you keep going north, beyond 55
degrees north, you will find the Arctic and the site of the
Arctic Winter Games.
The Arctic Winter Games are like the Olympics but they are
only for people who live north of 55 degrees, or "North
of the 55th parallel."
At the Arctic Winter Games, participants compete in sports.
It is also a place for northern people to learn about each
others’ cultures.
