It comes as no surprise that CBC Radio 2 would be a proud partner of the Kiwanis Music Festival, an event that promotes emerging talent in the classical music genre. What may surprise you is just how talented many of the performers are. The careers of well-known performers such as pianists Angela Hewitt and Andrew Tunis, and mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah (host of CBC's Tempo) were launched by the Kiwanis organization.
As in years past, we're thrilled to present the 2013 Music in Schools Award to a local school. Congratulations to Canterbury High School for taking this years prize.
The 2013 Kiwanis Music Festival takes place from April 8 through 27 in ten locations throughout Ottawa. 10,000 performers of all ages will perform and be judged by teachers and performers of the highest professional standing with the winners getting an opportunity to compete at the provincial level in June.
One of the ones to watch is Mikaela Bennett, competing in a number of the vocal categories. We had the opportunity to speak with Mikaela about being accepted to the Juilliard School and what it's like to perform on stage.
