.Lanier Phillips' life was forever changed by the kindness of the people of St. Lawrence.  The black man was in the U.S. Navy when his ship, the Truxton, went aground.  Until that terrible day, he had known nothing but hatred and bigotry at the hand of white people.  From the CBC Radio archives, this is Lanier Phillips in his own words.
