Richmond Hill (075)Candidates:
This riding north of Toronto contains part of the town of Richmond Hill. It is bordered by Highway 7 in the south and Gamble Road, Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road East in the north. It lies between Highway 404 in the east and Bathurst Street in the west. In the 2001 census, 22 per cent of the population was ethnically Chinese, six per cent Jewish and 8.6 per cent Italian. Half the population consisted of immigrants. Manufacturing and retail trade are the main employers, with strong printing and publishing, telecommunications and information technology sectors. Average family income is $89,329 and unemployment is 4.9 per cent.The 2007 redistribution created the Richmond Hill riding from parts of the Oak Ridges riding, which was created in the 1999 redistribution.

Political History:Tory Frank Klees won the first election held in the Oak Ridges riding, routing Liberal Vito Spatafora by 13,005 votes in 1999. Klees was first elected in 1995 in what was then the York Mackenzie riding. Klees hung on to the seat in 2003 by a narrow margin, trumping Liberal Helena Jaczek by 2,143 votes. He held a number of cabinet portfolios under Mike Harris and Ernie Eves, including as tourism minister and transportation minister.
