Prince Edward - Hastings (073)Candidates:
This south-central riding extends from the Hastings Highlands in the north to Lake Ontario in the south, including Prince Edward County. The main population centres are Belleville and Picton, but it also includes Deseronto, Bloomfield and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The major industries are manufacturing, the service sector and some agriculture. In the 1999 redistribution, the new Prince Edward-Hastings riding combined 80 per cent of the old Quinte riding with 60 per cent of the old Prince Edward-Hastings.

( Acrobat Reader required - download free Acrobat Reader.) Political History:In Quinte, Conservative Dick Potter won in 1967 and 1971. Liberal Hugh O'Neil held the seat from his first victory in 1975 until the Tories took it back in 1995. In the former riding of Prince Edward-Lennox, Tory N.E. Whitney served from 1951 to 1971. Fellow Tory James Taylor extended the Conservative streak, winning in 1971, 1975, 1977, 1981 and 1985. In 1987, Liberal Keith MacDonald won the riding. New Democrat Paul Johnson won the renamed riding of Prince Edward-Lennox-South Hastings in 1990, but lost in 1995 to Tory Gary Fox. Fox was edged out in 1999, losing to Liberal Ernie Parsons by just 56 votes. Parsons kept the seat in 2003 but left to become a justice of the peace in June 2007, leaving his seat open for the 2007 election.
