Haldimand - Norfolk (028)Candidates:
This southern riding extends from Lake Erie in the south to the city of Brantford in the north and contains some 138 hamlets. Manufacturing and agriculture are key sectors of the economy, with dairy and tobacco farming being significant parts of the agriculture sector. The 1999 redistribution created the Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant riding, which combined 85 per cent of the former Norfolk riding with 40 per cent of Brant-Halidmand. The 2007 redistribution took the bulk of the old riding and combined it with a small section cent of Erie-Lincoln, while shortening the name.

[PDF, 314KB] ( Acrobat Reader required - download free Acrobat Reader.) Political History:Robert Nixon sat in Brant-Oxford-Norfolk from 1975 to 1985, and in Brant-Haldimand in 1987 and 1990. Nixon was the provincial Liberal leader from 1967 to 1976, and again from 1983 to 1984. Nixon served as Ontario's treasurer from 1985 to 1991, when he left provincial politics to become Agent General of Ontario in Great Britain. Liberal Ronald Eddy took the seat in the March 1992 byelection held after Nixon's resignation. Eddy lost to PC Peter Preston in 1995 and returned to municipal politics, later to become mayor of Brant. Preston served until 1999, when his seat disappeared due to the riding redistribution. He ran in Hamilton East, but lost to Liberal Dominic Agostino. The PCs captured the new riding in 1999 as Toby Barrett defeated Liberal Doug Miller. Barrett retained the seat in 2003, beating Liberal Rob Esselment by 2,958 votes. (The CBC does not endorse and is not responsible for the content of external sites.
