Etobicoke North (026)Candidates:
More than half of the population of this lower-middle to middle-class Toronto riding is composed immigrants, and it boasts the second highest number of Punjabi speakers in the province. The riding is located entirely in the former city of Etobicoke, which has formed part of Toronto's west end since amalgamation. The riding is bordered by Steeles Avenue in the north, Dixon Road and Highway 401 to the south, Highway 427 to the west and the Humber River to the east. Both the north campus of Humber College and the Woodbine Racetrack are located within the riding. The Etobicoke North riding formed in 1999's redistribution includes all of the former Etobicoke-Rexdale riding and 20 per cent of Etobicoke-Humber.

[PDF, 255KB] ( Acrobat Reader required - download free Acrobat Reader.) Political History:In the old riding of Etobicoke-Rexdale, NDP candidate Ed Philip won in 1987 and 1990. He was later appointed to a series of cabinet posts under Bob Rae. Philip lost his seat in 1995 to Progressive Conservative John Hastings, who won again in 1999. Hastings opted not to run again in 2003: Liberal Shafiq Qaadri won the riding easily, beating PC hopeful Baljit Gosal by 9,787 votes. A graduate of University of Toronto Medical School, Qaadri was appointed the parliamentary assistant to the minister of health promotion.
