Political History:

One of Etobicoke Lakeshore's most famous former MPPs is Alan Eagleson, who sat as the riding's Tory member from 1963 to 1967. Eagleson left to head the National Hockey League Players' Association. The riding was won by Tory and NDP candidates in the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1990, NDP Ruth Grier defeated Liberal Sam Shepard by 11,112 votes and would go on to hold the environment and health portfolios. Grier placed third in the 1995 election, trailing Liberal Bruce Davis and Tory frontrunner Morley Kells.

Kells captured the new Etobicoke-Lakeshore riding in 1999 and again 2003, beating Liberal Laurel Broten by nearly 5,000 votes. Broten bounced back in 2003, defeating Kells by a similar margin. Broten was named environment minister in June 2005.
