Brant (009)Candidates:
This southwestern Ontario riding is located west of Hamilton and encompasses the city of Brantford, the rural municipalities of Paris and St. George, and the townships of Brantford and South Dumfries. The Six Nations and New Credit reserves are contained in the riding. It is sustained mainly by light manufacturing jobs, but also has a history in agriculture. Created in 1999, this new riding absorbed the former Brantford riding as well as 30 per cent of the rural fringes of the city (which were in Brant-Haldimand).

From 1975 to 1981, the Brantford riding was held by the NDP. Progressive Conservative candidate Phil Gillies won the riding in 1981 and went on to hold cabinet positions under Bill Davis. In 1987, the Liberals won, only to have the riding return to the NDP in 1990. The PCs under Mike Harris regained the seat in 1995. Liberal Dave Levac won a narrow victory in 1999, beating PC Alayne Sokoloski despite a strong majority win for Harris's PC government. Levac won again in 2003, crushing Sokoloski by 10,621 votes.
