Riding Profile:
More than 86 per cent of residents in this affluent riding north of
Toronto are homeowners, the highest percentage in the province.
The riding is also ethnically diverse, with an immigrant population
of more than 50 per cent. It holds the province's third largest Chinese
population along with significant East Indian and Italian communities.
Its borders run from 16th Avenue in the north to Steeles Avenue in
the south, Highway 404 in the west and the Markham city limits in the
east.
Markham is home to over 8,000 businesses, many of which are in the
high-technology sector.
As a result of the 1999 redistribution, the new riding of Markham was
formed out of two-thirds of the old Markham riding.
Political History:
In the old Markham riding. Tory Don Cousens won in 1987 and 1990 before
leaving provincial politics to become mayor of Markham. Incumbent David
Tsubouchi first won the riding for the PCs in 1995, and served in the
cabinets of Mike Harris and Ernie Eves.
