Riding Profile:

This urban riding occupies the southern portion of Hamilton and has a significant Italian population.

To the north, it borders the Niagara Escarpment; to the south, the city limits of Hamilton.

The primary employment sectors are manufacturing and the service industry.

The new Hamilton Mountain riding, which was formed in 1999's redistribution, adds one fifth of the old Hamilton West to all of the former riding of Hamilton Mountain.

Political History:

After 10 years of PC rule, the former riding of Hamilton Mountain was won by NDP candidate Brian Charlton in 1977. Charlton would be re-elected four times, and would serve as Minister of Energy and Government House Leader in the Bob Rae government.

The NDP lost the seat to PC candidate Trevor Pettit in 1995. He was toppled by Liberal incumbent Marie Bountrogianni in 1999.
