More than half the population of this lower-middle to middle-class riding
is composed immigrants, and it boasts the second highest number of Punjabi
speakers in the province.
The riding is located west of Toronto and is entirely in Etobicoke.
The riding is bordered by Steeles Avenue in the north, Dixon Road and
Highway 401 to the south, Highway 427 to the west and the Humber River
to the east.
Both the north campus of Humber College and the Woodbine Racetrack
are located here.
The new Etobicoke North, as of 1999's redistribution, includes all
of the former Etobicoke-Rexdale and 20 per cent of Etobicoke-Humber.
In the old riding of Etobicoke-Rexdale, NDP candidate Ed Philip won
in 1987 and 1990. He was later appointed to a series of cabinet posts
under Bob Rae. Philip lost his seat to the Tories in 1995.
After winning the seat in 1999, Tory incumbent John Hastings decided to not seek re-election here.
