I haven't ever experienced anything like what I experienced at the finish line of the bobsleigh race. The excitement! The noise! Everything about the final three runs down the track was electrifying. When the crowd realized that Shelley-Ann and Helen in Canada 2 could do no worse than bronze, the celebration began. But when they realized that Canada 2 was going to make it to silver, they were ecstatic and the noise elevated to prove it!! I had people calling and texting me - they were yelling at the TV at the top of their lungs. Everyone is so excited about Shelley-Ann and Helen bringing home silver medals but even more so that Canada earned not just silver but silver and gold.
On Tuesday, I had watched the first set of races on a TV inside the Family Olympic House. I noticed my 19-month-old son Andre staring much too intently at the screen and I thought, "oh no, let's switch the channel, he looks too interested in this". All I could think of was a future in which I climb snowy mountains, with my son in pursuit of a medal. Switch the channel please! What have you done Auntie Shelley-Ann?!?!
You have accomplished your dream. Those of you who saw the tears and the bright smiles at the finish line understand her joy. After working hard and struggling through the years, Shelley-Ann's dream to represent Canada came true in a big way and words cannot express the joy I feel for her. Now Shelley-Ann, when and where is the next adventure?
