Along with my wife Suzanne, I was fortunate enough to be able to fly out to Vancouver. We will be joining roughly thirty other family members and friends of Team Martin, whom are all staying within a few kilometers of the curling venue - the newly constructed Vancouver Olympic Center.
The group of family also has full-event passes to the men's curling, so we will be cheering as loudly as we can! Full credit goes to the Canadian Curling Association and Olympic Committee involved with the Friends and Family program, as it has allowed us to access tickets and accommodations for this great event, whereas we may not have been able to otherwise. A once in a lifetime opportunity!!
Team Martin is composed of skip Kevin Martin, third John Morris, second Marc Kennedy, lead Ben Hebert, coach Jules Owchar, and alternate Adam Enright. The team was built in 2006 by combining four of the top players of their respective positions. Bonspiel after bonspiel, city after city, over a 3 ½ year period, the team has now accomplished the goal of representing Canada in Vancouver. They are arguably the hardest working team in the game, whether it's throwing rocks on the ice, or working out in the gym in the off-season. This extra effort and dedication results in their great successes on the curling ice. Being a somewhat competitive curler myself, I've had my share of beatings by the Martin team over the years.
I was really hoping to have the first segment out earlier this week, but it was extremely hectic trying to prepare for this trip. Unfortunately, our 19 month-old daughter Julia isn't with us in Vancouver - but she'll be enjoying a two-week sleepover at Grandma's house.
I would love to go on and on about the excitement we are all feeling as we get ready for Vancouver, but I am a civil engineer by trade - I love math, but writing is a different story. Two fingers can only type so quick. With that being said, I am hoping to have blogs and pictures out throughout the event, to provide everyone at home a bit of insight into this great experience.
Eh Oh Canada Go!!! Best of luck to the Ol' Bear and his Cubs! We'll see you guys soon.....
