Ryan Cochrane of Victoria, earned a bronze medal and bettered his own Canadian record in the men's 400-metre freestyle at the Janet Evans International swimming competition Saturday.

In addition to Cochrane's medal, Brian Johns of Richmond, B.C., took the bronze in the men's 200 freestyle, while Vancouver's Tanya Hunks won silver in the women's 400 individual medley.

Cochrane, 19, finished the 400 in three minutes, 47.21 seconds to beat his Canadian record time of 3:47.92 set at the Beijing Swimming Trials in April.

"To be in the middle of some hard training and go this fast is very encouraging," Cochrane said.

"But I knew at trials there were areas I could have done better and the work I've put in the last few weeks has really paid off. And after tonight there's still so many little things I can do better to gain time — but this was exciting for me."

Ous Mellouli of Tunisia won the men's 400 in 3:44.79, while Larsen Jensen of the U.S. earned the silver medal.

In the men's 200 freestyle, Johns beat out Victoria natives Rick Say and Stefan Hirniak, who finished fourth and seventh respectively. Switzerland's Dominik Meichtry won the gold in 1:48.31.

Hunks won her second silver medal in as many days on Saturday. She finished second behind Savannah King of Vernon, B.C., in the women's 400-metre freestyle event on Friday.
