Team Canada flattens Russia in quarter-finals
Canada still has to win two more games to claim gold in the men's hockey tournament at the 2010 Olympics, but it's hard to imagine that any team can beat the Canadians after their masterful performance against Russia on Wednesday. Canada dominated its longtime hockey foes for a 7-3 win in the quarter-finals to advance to a match against the winner of the Sweden-Slovakia game later on Wednesday. It marks the first time Canada has defeated Russia in the Olympics since 1960.
Canadian women's bobsleigh teams win gold, silver
Another record breaking day at the Whistler Sliding Centre helped Canada capture their first-ever medals in women's two-man bobsleigh in Vancouver on Wednesday, taking both gold and silver. Kaillie Humphries of Calgary and Heather Moyse of Summerside, P.E.I., took top spot with a combined four-run time of 3 minutes 32:28 seconds, including a track record of 52.85 on their third run. The Canada 2 tandem of Helen Upperton of Calgary and Shelley Ann Brown of Pickering, Ont., were 85-100ths of a second behind their Canada 1 counterparts for the silver medal.
Hughes ties Klassen with 6th Olympic medal
Speedskater Clara Hughes, in her final individual Olympic race, tied teammate Cindy Klassen's all-time record for a Canadian with a sixth career Olympic medal on Wednesday, a bronze in the women's 5,000 metres.
Canadian women take silver in short-track relay
Canada won its second short-track speedskating medal of the Vancouver Games on Wednesday, with the women's 3,000-metre relay team moving up a spot to take silver after a disqualification at Pacific Coliseum. The Canadian team comprises Tania Vicent of Laval, Que., Montreal's Kalyna Roberge, Marianne St-Gelais of Saint-Félicien, Que., and Calgary's Jessica Gregg.
Vonn crashes out of giant slalom
Lindsey Vonn's hopes for a third medal from the Vancouver Olympics were put on hold when the U.S. star crashed in the opening run of Wednesday's giant slalom race, breaking her right pinkie finger.
