Canada’s Montgomery wins gold in skeleton
Jon Montgomery from Russell, Man., has won the gold medal in men's skeleton at the Vancouver Olympics. After sitting second overall heading into the fourth and final round of the men's skeleton, the 30-year-old ripped down the track at the Whistler Sliding Centre in 52.36 seconds.
Virtue, Moir 2nd after compulsory dance
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir were sitting in second place after the compulsory dance opened the ice-dance competition on Friday at Pacific Coliseum. Skating last among the 23 pairs, the three-time Canadian champions scored 42.74 points for their Tango Romantica. It was a personal best in the compulsory dance..
Hollingsworth crushed with 5th place in skeleton
Mellisa Hollingsworth entered the Vancouver Olympics as an overwhelming favourite to reach the podium in women's skeleton. On Friday, she left the Whistler Sliding Centre in tears. The 29-year-old from Eckville, Alta., sat second overall heading into her fourth and final run. but part way down the track she bounced twice against the wall. The slight error slowed her down enough to send her sliding into fifth, with a cumulative time of three minutes, 36.60 seconds.
Canada's Douglas disqualified in men's skeleton
Michael Douglas, one of Canada's top contenders in the men's skeleton, was disqualified just prior to his third run in the competition on Friday at the Whistler Sliding Centre. Race officials said Douglas was late getting his sled to the parque fermé, the area where the skeleton sleds are inspected before they are allowed to go down the run.
Canada's Guay continues hard-luck streak
Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal won the Olympic super-giant slalom on Friday for his second medal in as many races at the Vancouver Games, with Canadian Erik Guay yet again left agonizingly close to a podium finish. Montreal's Guay missed the podium by three-100ths of a second on Whistler Mountain, finishing fifth for the second race in a row.
