Canada's Robertson takes snowboard cross silver
Snowboarder Mike Robertson spent much of Monday afternoon staring down an empty mountain, until American Seth Wescott overtook him late in the final to edge out the Canadian for Olympic gold. "It was kind of bittersweet," said Robertson. "Obviously I wanted to win for sure, but I'm so happy to be second. It's amazing." Robertson, who is originally from Edmonton but trains out of Canmore, Alta., had jumped out ahead in each of his first three heats during his snowboard cross competition at the Vancouver Games, never relinquishing first place.
Babcock sets lines, starting Luongo
Hockey coach Mike Babcock and his coaching staff put the Canadian players through an hour-long practice Monday, in which they quickly went through defensive zone coverage, the transition game and some work on the special teams.
Wotherspoon 9th as S. Korean wins speedskating
Canadian speedskater Jeremy Wotherspoon fell short of the podium in his final attempt to win Olympic gold in the 500 metres. Tae-Bum Mo won South Korea's first-ever gold in this event with a combined time of 69.82 seconds from the first and second races at the Richmond Olympic Oval in B.C. on Monday night.
Chinese skating pairs win gold, silver
The Chinese pair of Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo were the bookends of the pairs competition — skating first in the short program and last in the free skate — proving that starting order means very little in determining the final result.
Defago dashes Canadian downhill hopes
The Olympic men's downhill was worth the wait for Didier Defago. On a disappointing day for Canadian skiers, the unheralded Swiss veteran shook off a two-day delay to win gold Monday in Whistler, B.C., edging out more recognizable foes Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway and Bode Miller of the U.S. on the medal stand.
