Vancouver Olympics officially open
The Olympic flame kissed the dark Vancouver sky, a bright symbol of hope on a day of shocking loss. After months of speculation, it was hockey great Wayne Gretzky who lit the outdoor cauldron and officially launched the Vancouver Olympics on Friday night.
Georgian luger dies in crash
Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died Friday in a horrific crash in an Olympic training run at Whistler, B.C., just hours before the opening ceremony. Kumaritashvili was coming around the final 270-degree turn, where speeds approach 140 kilometres an hour, when he flipped off his sled and flew into a metal pole.
Sombre tone sets mood for Day One
On Friday morning, the Olympic torch relay moved through Stanley Park and into the crowded West End, nearing its final destination of BC Place. Vancouver police got their first taste of trouble.
