German men win biathlon relay

Last Updated: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 | 12:55 PM ET

Germany raced to victory Tuesday in the men's 4x7.5-kilometre biathlon relay at the Torino Winter Games.

The Germen men – Sven Fischer, Michael Greis, Ricco Gross and Michael Roesh – posted a winning time of one hour, 21 minutes and 51.5 seconds at the Cesana San Sicario course, 97 km west of Turin.

Russia claimed the silver and France took the bronze. Norway, Olympic champions four years ago in Salt Lake City, finished 5th.

No Canadian team was entered in the event.

The victory was sweet vindication for a German team that embarrassed its home crowd with poor shooting and bad skiing to finish sixth at the 2005 world championships.

The win gives Fischer his fourth career Olympic gold during his 13-year career. Fischer, a four-time world champion, ranks second in the World Cup standings this season and has been one of the most consistent biathletes over his illustrious career.

Germany has now captured four gold medals – and seven medals overall – in biathlon at the Torino Games. Greis won the men's 20 km biathlon event and Fischer won the 10 km sprint. Kati Wilhelm won the women's 10 km.
