Darcy Hollingsworth (second from right) and the rest of his family has been sporting his daughter Mellisas (second from left) career for years. (Darcy Hollingsworth) I'm Darcy Hollingsworth and my daughter is world champion Skeleton racer, Mellisa Hollingsworth. We live in the foothills of Alberta.
"Breath and stay focused relaxed," that's what I have to say to myself so that I don't pass out as Mellisa is flying down the track in Igls, Austria.
I am so anxious nervous and excited.
I was raised to be tough in the hills of Alberta. I cowboyed my whole life, rode bucking horses and I have been hurt with some broken bones. I have squared off with some tough men and have won some and lost some. But this is something else.
I find myself almost in tears as I watch Mellisa chase her dreams. She amazes me at her ability to stay focused on her goal. I feel so much pride to watch her do her thing and she is living the dream.
She is on a journey that few people understand. The hours and hours of hard work in the gym soaking in ice baths just so she can train harder.
Tammy [my wife] and I cheered as she raced down the track and when she was interviewed after the race. When she was presented the trophy for being the world champion, my eyes kind of got a little misty.
We talked to her this morning and she can't wait to get home and sleep in her own bed.
She is very happy but knows this is just one step and there is lots of work yet before she steps out on the track in Whistler in front of a nation that will be cheering for my little girl.
I am so proud and blessed.
