Americans Bill Demong and Todd Lodwick were first and second in a World Cup Nordic combined event Sunday that was shaped by a cancellation of the jumping portion, in Val Di Fiemma, Italy.

One of the two jumping tracks in Predazzo broke so organizers decided to use the jumping results from Friday to arrange the start of the nine-kilometre cross country race up Mount Cermis, which is usually used as a downhill ski slope.

Demong, who was seventh in the jumping section, won in 33 minutes 49.9 seconds. Lodwick finished 15.3 seconds behind and Eric Frenzel of Germany was third, 24.1 seconds back.

It was the first win of the season for Demong, who won a world championship title in Liberec, Czech Republic, last season.

Billy Demong and Johnny Spillane have given the Americans a 1-2 finish in the Nordic combined large hill competition that was marred by bad weather.
Own the Podium's forgotten little brother
It was a bad dream, only Jason Myslicki was wide awake and sobbing. Sobbing so hard he could not speak. His head was resting against his jumping skis. His heart was breaking.
Austria wins Nordic combined team gold
Austria won the gold medal in the Nordic combined team relay on Tuesday, edging the Americans.
France's Chappuis wins gold in nordic combined
