If you're looking to spend countless hours scrolling through your favourite skier's tweets during the Olympic Games, you could be out of luck.

Especially if that athlete is particularly bad at reading the IOC blogging guidelines.

It seems many of the competitors heading to Vancouver next week think that these Olympic rules suggest a social media blackout.

American skier Lindsey Vonn took to Facebook and Twitter to announce "because of the Olympic rules (blackout period), I will not be able to post any updates from now until March 3rd. Sorry, it bums me out too!"

But Vonn is wrong. Instead, the IOC only wants athletes to blog about personal experiences and to avoid acting as though they are journalists. Their Olympic blogs must be like a diary and interviews of other athletes is forbidden.

The IOC says the measures are to ensure that athletes do not compromise the security or organization of the Winter Games, and to protect the privacy of other competitors.
