Whether you're hung up waiting for the ice to be resurfaced at the Richmond Oval, itching for a cocktail after that gold medal ceremony at BC Place or maybe just wondering where is the best place to grab lunch in the wonderful neighbourhood you just wandered into, we'll be taking you on a whirlwind gastronomic tour of the Lower Mainland in the next week with some tips on where to find the most delectable eats

Richmond

The Year of the Tiger is upon us, but that growl's most likely just your stomach: To navigate the plethora of great dim sum, northern and Hong Kong-style Chinese cuisine available in the Vancouver suburb, Amy Rosen's guide to eating your way through the strip malls and hidden gems of this area is an indispensable cheat sheet. We know, 'cause we had it tucked safely in our hip pocket when we munched our way across five or six parking lots last summer.

In particular, don't miss the Aberdeen Centre -- it's a tonic for anyone fed up with the usual banal chain store experience of most North American malls -- and it even has an outpost (there are five in Vancouver) of Toronto's hottest new Asian resto -- Guu, in case you were hoping to skirt the crush of diners in T.O.

We'd also be remiss if we didn't mention that the dumplings at Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant will in fact melt in your mouth. So if you're used to eating dim sum that tastes pre-made, we suggest eating sitting down at this banquet-style eatery, preferably with both feet on the floor. The resto also has a downtown location, on Main Street, in the city's historic Chinatown district.

And that "struggling" Richmond restaurant that got name-checked in Jennifer 8. Lee's bestselling food-adventure book The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food? Oh, it's still around -- you might want to call for a reservation, though.

Of course, off the beaten path you're just as likely to find something, made by some chef too new to the area to have been discovered by the food press yet ... don't believe us? Well, the rest of the world seems pretty convinced that Richmond has the best Chinese food outside of, well, China. Sorry, New York, San Francisco.
