As Canada prepares to watch its athletes go for gold at the Olympics in Vancouver starting on Feb. 12, the National Post looks back at the 39 gold medals the nation has won in Winter Games history.

Name Beckie Scott
Olympics 2002 at Salt Lake City, Utah
Event Cross Country Skiing: Women's 10-kilometre pursuit.

The setting After an underwhelming performance in Nagano in 1998, an older,
wiser Scott set her sights on the podium in Salt Lake City.

On the day Scott gave it her all on the day of the pursuit, but was forced
to settle for bronze after Russians Olga Danilova and Larissa Lazutina beat
her to the finish line. It was the first Olympic medal ever won by a
Canadian in the cross country, and it was about to get even more impressive.
Shortly after the race, Danilova and Lazutina tested positive for a banned
substance. Scott¹s finish was upgraded to second place, and later ‹ after
hearings and investigations ‹ first. She was eventually given her
long-deserved gold in June, 2004, when she also became the first athlete to
be awarded all three medals in one race.

Afterlife Scott travelled to her third straight Olympics in Turin in 2006,
winning a silver medal in the women¹s team sprint. She retired shortly after
as Canada¹s most decorated cross-country skier. In 2005, Scott joined the
athlete committee for the World Anti-Doping Agency. Since then, the Canadian
has been known for her charitable work with UNICEF and Right to Play. She is
also a member of the 2010 Vancouver Organizing Committee¹s board of
directors.
