Vancouver Now - FEBRUARY 12 to 28, VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Higher. Faster. Stronger. Fuller.

That's turning into my motto for these Winter Olympics.  I have developed an appetite of Olympian proportions. Thankfully, this is a city that loves food.

I have developed an appetite of Olympian proportions. Thankfully, this is a city that loves food.

Vancouver has a huge Asian influence, and you see that on every street corner.

Almost as prevalent as the coffee shops are cheap sushi joints. Even the dodgiest-looking place, it turns out, can hook you up with great dynamite rolls, barbecued eel and spicy tuna.

Much has been made of the lineups here in Vancouver during these Games. Some of the longest are found at Japadog, the Japese-style hotdog stand downtown. If you've ever wondered what street meat with wasabi mayo tastes like, this is the corner for you.

Essential on a trip to Vancouver is a trip to Vij's. The best Indian restaurant in Canada also has a take-out section, with vacuum-packed selections of yam dumplings and lamb curries. Hello carry-on luggage.

Hon's Won Ton House has been a regular stop for a warming bowl of soup, pot stickers and some of the best smoked pork you could imagine. The room is a barn and the food is brilliant (and cheap!).

Further afield, the real discovery of the trip for me has been izakaya restaurants. The Japanese pub-style restaurants are loud, packed and creative. Hapo Izakaya in Kitsilano has seen repeat visits by your correspondent for delicacies like ebi mayo, raw spot prawns and wagyu beef cooked at your table on a hot brick.

One week left of these Games, and while Canada may not own the podium, Vancouver is running things in the food department.
