Beard Blog 4 - Bronze Medal Beard, Gold Medal Dreams

While sitting in the GM Place (sorry, Canada Hockey Place) after the conclusion of an exciting Bronze Medal Hockey game, I reflected on the journey that my beard and Canada have been on these Games. Sunday is the day it's all going to happen. And while my beard didn't quite achieve the status I had hoped, I stuck with it through ridicule from Zed, complete disinterest from the opposite sex and a slow start from both Team Canada overall, and particularly, the men's hockey team. Now almost every one of our national dreams are on the verge of coming true and we're on the verge of making history at the Games. Needless to say, the beard and I are ready.

The Art of Olympic Couch Surfing

When planning a trip to the Olympics: It's good to know people. As you could probably guess, staying at a hotel during an event like this would in all likelihood cost you to finance another mortgage. When the world comes to an event like this, hotel prices are at an all-time high. With the price of event tickets, food and entertainment, the cost of taking in the Olympics can come with a pretty hefty price tag. During the planning of this trek across the country, one of the key questions was: where do we stay? Between Lane and I, we both had a few friends in the Vancouver area that were summoned to help us out with a place to crash. All we needed were a couple of couches.

Caesars, Semi-Finals and Celebrations

Friday at the Olympics was all about hockey semi-finals.  Sure there was a women's curling final, and yes, Canada won four more medals (wooohooo!) but let's face it - the Canada / Slovakia game was by far the main event.  With bars lining people up around the city more than 4 hours before game time, the buzz in Vancouver was impossible to escape.

An Olympic stroll in the village

Our final day in Whistler got off to a somewhat slow start. Still on a high from what we witnessed at the Sliding Centre the day before accompanied with a dominant win over the Russians in men's hockey, Lane and I took full advantage of our final night in the village. We celebrated a great day in Canadian sport into the wee hours of the morning with fellow Canucks... and oh yes... had another good night's sleep on the sectional at Nordic Place. After checking out of Kristen and Johnny's appartment, we had a few hours to kill before boarding our bus back to Vancouver... we decided to pass the time doing something that (believe it or not), we had yet to do, wander the village of Whistler.

Gambling on Gold in Whistler

Our first night in Whistler was also the first night since the journey began that we actually got a good night's sleep. After scratching our heads and wondering what happened the night before around 11am, we got excited we'd gotten so much shut eye. Our new Whistler sectional sofa completely did the trick to get us rested up to go see Canada go for bobsleigh gold and - if you can believe it - skip the Russia/Canada hockey game to do it...

Off to the mountains we go...

After spending a few days in Vancouver it was time for a change of scenery for Lane and I. In order to take full advantage of the entire Olympic experience, we boarded a bus to head up to Whistler for a couple of days to meet up with a bunch of friends from Toronto and Lane's hometown of St. Thomas Ontario...not to mention a couple of Olympic events.

Terrible Olympic Beard #3 - A reason to believe

It's pretty official.  I can't grow a beard - it's just genetics (thanks dad).  I've been searching for the real reason why this beard is patriotic and I've found it.  Just like Canada's men's hockey team, the beard isn't quite where I'd like it to be, but like the team, I'm going to persevere, stick to my guns and grow this thing.  In the mountains of Whistler, it's tough to give up hope... Go Canada.  Go beard.

All-Canadian eh?

If our first 2 full days in Vancouver belonged to the Dutch and the Russians, today was ALL about Canada!

The Russians are Coming! (actually, they're already here)

So on this, out great Canadian roadtrip, we felt it was very important to get to know our oldest rivals.  That's why, yesterday we dug in and got to the bottom of all things Russian!

And Then I Ate The Bowl!

As we enter the final leg of our Olympic journey, it's high time we told you a thing or two about the meals we've been eating this week. You'd think that being "stuck" on a train (as the pessimists out there would say) would limit the menu options, but one thing we learned quickly was that there is a WORLD of difference between plane food and train food. I mean, the grub on this thing is out of this world! There's definitely a part of me that's not looking forward to getting to Vancouver when my diet inevitably shifts to burgers and pizza slices for the duration of the trip. So I'm just gonna enjoy this for now... and hopefully make you all a little jealous in the process! So eat your heart out - I know I have!

Talkin' Shop with a VIA Rail Legend

We've done some video to show you around "The Place to Be", the Park Car on VIA 1 (which hopefully the internet will allow us to upload soon), but we didn't really get too much into the man who makes it tick.  Meet Brian.  We have no idea what Brian's last name is and, frankly, we don't care.  Brian is wicked.

The excitement builds... Hours away from taking the ultimate Canadian road trip (however, in this case the road will consist more of steel than pavement) culminating in the Olympic city of Vancouver.

The Olympic Mixtape - Canadian Edition

So... I'm sitting around trying to fully stock my iPod to last for a nearly 4-day train ride across Canada. The goal: EVERY track WILL be Canadian.

I don't care that they don't care (and you shouldn't either)

If you'd been following us on twitter the last few days, you would've seen a lot of tweets amplifying my frustration around being in the US for the opening of Canada's Olympic Games. Let me tell you, it was tough going.

Not exactly the best place to start from...

If you can believe it, I'm a little annoyed right now. I mean, I'm about to live the Canadian Dream, and I'm way too excited to be writing this blog and tweeting about our Olympic trip - I'm surprised I'm sleeping! But before all that fun really begins, I have to go out of town for work tomorrow. To Los Angeles.

Ready To Roll!

I gotta admit - this time last year, heading to Vancouver/Whistler to take in the winter Olympics didn't really seem to be on the radar. The idea of heading down south to soak in a few rays seemed more likely than heading on a cross-Canada trek.
