The world is officially laughing at us

These Games are becoming the Error Games, or the Mistake Games, or the Calamity Games. (Yes, let's go with that one. It sounds like Calamity Jane, and calamity is a great word.)

Here's the thing: Overall, all these people are, in the big picture, right:

Yep. These Games are becoming the Error Games, or the Mistake Games, or the Calamity Games.

(Yes, let's go with that one. It sounds like Calamity Jane, and calamity is a great word.)

The short list:

• Canadian resurfacing machines that had to be replaced by a real, American-made Zamboni.

• Ticketing pickup nightmares.

• Transportation problems that continue to occur.

• Weather so bad that at Whistler and Cypress that there may be no fans at Cypress mountain before it's over, and the last alpine ski event, as David Letterman cracked, "has been postponed to Labour Day."

Letterman also cracked that it had been so warm in Vancouver that today, "three figure skaters fell through the ice." We can only hope it included the ones wearing the clown outfit.

The best metaphor might be the inaccessibility of the Olympic cauldron, which is a public relations catastrophe. It's 100 feet away from the public, behind a chain-link fence. Meanwhile, broadcasters with security clearance pose gleefully under the torch, all but mocking the unwashed masses.

And none of this even mentions the preventable death of Nodar Kumaritshvili. Here's the thing, Canada: We are screwing this thing up. The world is laughing at us. Alex Bilodeau's gold medal papered over the cracks for a moment, and gave us all a rush of good vibes. But thats fading, and the cracks, widening as they are, are what remains.
