Gold medal atmosphere

It's all coming to an end and Canada has the chance to finish these Games off with more than a bang.

Gearing up for the big game today started in the early hours of the morning with people lining the streets to grab a seat to watch Canada duke it out with the United States, the team we all love to hate.

Gearing up for the big game today started in the early hours of the morning with people lining the streets to grab a seat to watch Canada duke it out with the United States, the team we all love to hate.

Adoring fans, dressed to the nines in Canadiana, are taking over this city for our last shot at a gold medal.

Men with red and white body paint and women in shiny red leotards and black bikinis walk into coffee shops and buy some breakfast. The furniture section in the Hudson's Bay Company has suddenly turned into a movie theatre with every couch and chair occupied by shoppers and fans that couldn't find a place anywhere else. This is just a normal morning here in Vancouver at the 2010 Olympic Games.

The puck dropped a few minutes ago and there's a nervous energy in the air. It's as if every second that goes by is the most important second of our lives. There really is no way to describe what hockey does to this country and the spell it casts on us. Canadians take pride in the fact that this is our game and there's nothing like proving it on the world stage.

It's no coincidence that the gold medal game is left to the last day, last event, last moment of our Olympic experience. It's the game we've been waiting for. What makes it that much better is throwing down with the U.S.

Canadians all love to beat the Americans in sport and vice versa. The tasteless bad jokes, the rivalries and constant comparisons between us make it hard not to. Look at Stephen Colbert and the ease in which you can rile up a nation without knowing anything about their athletes. Attack Canadian pride and see the claws come out.

We play an aggressive hockey game and is just a little reminder to our neighbours down south that we're not as nice as they like to think we are. Hockey is on everyone's minds right now, but this entire Olympics has shown the world that we're a force to be reckoned with. If the gold haul the last couple of days didn't tell you that I don't know what would.

Sitting in the middle of Canada House watching this game play out, I am really going to miss this all when it's over. I hope we can keep the energy and spirit of these Games going strong, long after the flame has left Vancouver.

But it's not over yet, good luck boys show them who's game they're playing!
