Vancouver Now - FEBRUARY 12 to 28, VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

An emotional roller-coaster ride

I can't fully describe the feeling in the air right now Vancouver. With the Games off and running, if anything, these past two days have shown us how the Olympics is truly full of extremes.

I can't fully describe the feeling in the air right now Vancouver. With the Games off and running, if anything, these past two days have shown us how the Olympics is truly full of extremes. It pulls us between the highs and lows, putting each one of us on an emotional roller-coaster - a ride we'll never forget.

I became overwhelmed with emotion watching the Georgian delegation march out in Opening Ceremony, competing in tribute for their fallen teammate. This, to me, embodies strength and courage. Defining what it is to truly persevere.

The Olympics is all about pushing the limits of mankind, physically and mentally, striving for perfection and excellence. Our athletes test themselves each and every day - in training, in competition and in life. They have no fear because they love it.

It's what they live for.

This tragic accident reminds us that these athletes put themselves at risk everyday to have the great honour of representing their country at the Olympic Games. Nodar Kumaritashvili will always be remembered for his dedication and love for sport, as a true Olympian.

Our athletes lead extreme lives and the Games allows us all to step into their shoes for a few short days and experience the highs and lows of world class competitive sport. These first two days have showcased the incredible unity, strength and energy of our athletes and every nation that make the Olympic Games so special.

Stepping outside on the crowded Robson street in downtown Vancouver, the world is literally at our doorstep. Sharing in these moments, feeling for every athlete as if they were a part of their own family and finding a common ground to stand on.

It doesn't matter if your favorite athletes are winning or losing, the sheer fight of every one of them keeps the excitement going. I am so inspired watching these athletes go for it all, fall and get back up, triumph through pain and keep going no matter what. The fight is never ending.

Watching Kristi Richards fall on the moguls yesterday, put her skiis back on and finish like a champion is my favorite Olympic moment so far. That's what an Olympian is all about. She didn't hold herself back, took a risk and gave it all she had in her. Her composure and grace afterwards is everything I think an Olympian should be. Thank you for showing the world that you can pick yourself up from falling.

Even Olympians can forget that at times.
