(Anja Niedringhaus/Associated Press)Gary Reed easily won the men's 800 metres at the Victoria Track Classic Thursday in his fastest time of the season at 1.45.66 seconds.
Second place went to Andrew Ellerton of North Bay, Ont., in 1:46.12 with Kenya's Jackson Langat third in 1:47.60.
Placing fifth was Kevin Sullivan, the Canadian 1,500 metres and mile record holder who has already achieved the Olympic A+ standard in his specialty. On Thursday night he used the 800 metres as a test of speed. His time was 1:49.58.
Reed, who currently lives and trains in Victoria, B.C.,has a place on the Canadian Olympic team by virtue of his silver medal performance at the 2007 IAAF World Championships.
Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, B.C., won the shot put with a heave of 20.47 metres against inferior competition.
In the women's hurdles, Priscilla Lopes-Schliep beat fellow Canadian Angela Whyte in a time of 12.90 seconds. Whyte, who has been nursing a chronic knee injury, finished second in a time of 13.24 seconds. Whyte, a finalist at the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan, needs only to run the Olympic 'B' standard of 13.11 seconds to gain selection to the Canadian Olympic team.
