John Lee Sanders

John Lee Sanders has been making music for his whole life. He first performed on stage when with his brother's band in Birmingham Alabama when he was 12 years old.
Since then he's played major blues and jazz festivals around the world and worked with most of the legends in the business. He's been nominated for an Emmy and won a bunch of Canadian Music Awards. He's a pianist, sax and guitar player, songwriter and singer!

He came to Canada first to work with Long John Baldry and liked it so much he stayed.
He's going to be performing at the Powell River Blues Festival and the Pender Harbour Blues Festival early in June and opening for Bonnie Raitt in August.

Peter Boychuk : Shelter from the Storm

Peter Boychuk is about to experience one of the most amazing moments of his play writing career. It's not very long since Peter graduated with an MFA from the University of Victoria. Now he's getting to see a professional production of his first full length play, Shelter from the Storm, from Touchstone Theatre.

Shelter from the Storm looks at Canada's relations with young Americans escaping war by coming to our country.

Dave Morris : Photo Booth

Dave Morris has no idea what will happen when he goes on stage with his show Photo Booth at the Uno Festival in Victoria. Really, no idea. But that doesn't bother him at all. In fact that's they way he wants it. Dave performs improv and has been for more than a decade. In Photo Booth, as in earlier works, he explores characters and stories based on audience suggestions.

It's interesting to talk to Dave about improv. It's his way of performing and telling stories and also his way of living. Check out his TEDx talk The Way of Improv. (he's also a storyteller, poet, musician and blogger)

Samantha Dickie : Fired Up!

Samantha Dickie is a ceramic artist from Victoria whose work has been exhibited across the country.

She describes her pieces as organic in form, inspired by the natural environment and by elements of industrial decay in the landscape.

Samantha is a guest artist this weekend at the not-to-be-missed annual Fired Up! Contemporary Works in Clay show in Metchosin.

Samantha will be my guest Saturday morning just after the 7 am news.

Rayman Bhuller

Rayman Bhuller is one of Canada's most accomplished dhol players and founder of Surrey's Dhol Nation Academy. He's performing as part of the City of Bhangra Festival taking place in Vancouver and Surrey.
I had a great conversation with Rayman about his studies in India and his support of local artists.

Who's There: A celebration of Dr Peter Loeffler at UBC

Peter Loeffler taught theatre history for 30 years at UBC. In that time he inspired, motivated and challenged his students and became one of the much loved teachers for students from many disciplines. He was well known for his insightful encouragement of students, his inventive approaches to teaching and his generosity to many.

On May 26 a group of theatre alumni from UBC are presenting a series of theatrical shorts followed by a bit of party, all to honour their former professor and to raise money for the Peter Loeffler Memorial Prize in Theatre. It happens at the Frederick Wood Theatre, curtain at 7;30.

Deb Pickman and Gerald Vanderwoude have some very fond memories of studying and working with Peter Loeffler.

Photographer Hua Jin

There's a photographic and video show on right now at the Richmond Art Gallery by the Vancouver based artist Hua Jin.

Hua's show is called My Big Family. Hua was feeling very isolated when she moved, all by herself, to Canada so decided on a trip home to follow her family with a camera. The work also explores some of the effects of China's one child policy.

Hua Jin is a recent graduate of Emily Carr University.

This week you'll hear from the the stage manager. The legendary Chris Allen will take us into his world back stage and recall some of his highlights working in London's West End!

On June the first the doors will open on a brand new show at the Royal BC Museum featuring dozens of portraits of Queen Elizabeth II taken by the multi-talented Cecil Beaton. The images in the show range from shots of Princess Elizabeth as a young child and trace her official life (with some surprisingly domestic moments) up to 1968.

Pianist Jane Coop

Pianist Jane Coop is one of Canada's most distinguished musicians. She has recorded and toured extensively throughout North America, Asia and Europe. She has collaborated with the principal Orchestras of Canada. And she has taught at the University of British Columbia's School of Music for more than 3 decades. But now Jane has decided it's time to move on from the university and begin the next chapter in her life with a focus on performing.

She will be playing a farewell concert with friends on Sat May 26 at 4 pm at the Barnett Hall, UBC School of Music.

Armen Martirosyan with Inga and Anush Arshakyans

Armen Martiroysan is an Armenian-Russian composer and songwriter who now lives in B.C. where he is continuing his musical career.
He collaborates with many musicians here and in Europe, including two very talented sisters, Inga and Anush Arshakyans. They have represented Armenia at the Eurovision Song Contest and have recorded three albums.

They are performing on May 13 at 5 pm at the Gateway Theatre in Richmond.
