VSO School of Music Summer Jazz Workshop

Back in the days of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, jazz musicians learned their craft by playing in small groups led by the best musicians around. Nowadays, if you want to learn to play jazz, you go to college and study it there: the same way it works in the classical world.

But, a new summer jazz camp in Vancouver offers the best of both worlds. Jody Proznick - the Juno nominated bassist - runs the show at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music Summer Jazz Workshop. Her program offers the opportunity for students to learn jazz in small combos, under the instruction of renowned artists such as Bill Coon, Brad Turner and Steve Maddock.

Hear more about the program, along with some of the students swingin' sounds, at 7:40 on Sunday morning.

Circle Craft Summer Craft Market

If you stop by Vancouver's waterfront this weekend, just by the Vancouver Convention Centre, you'll see a couple of rows of white tents. And in those tents, you'll find all manners of handmade trinkets and treasures. This colourful summer market celebrates the 40th anniversary of Circle Craft: a collection of woodworkers, glass blowers, jewellers, fibre artists and other crafty types who sell their wares at shows like this.

Hear more about the market from its manager, Paul Yard, this Saturday at 7:40 am. The market is open from 9 am to 9 pm on Saturday, and 9 am to 5 pm on Sunday.
