Bill Metcalfe - Nelson Civic Theatre

In Nelson BC the Civic Theatre showed movies from the 1930s until it closed in 2011. It was one more victim of the new movie economy that has seen so many old style theatres closing in the past few years.

Recently a very energetic non profit group has been determined to turn the theatre into a modern 3-screen theatre for movies and live performances.

They got the blessing of the City of Nelson, which owns the building, and in the past six months the Nelson Civic Theatre Society has become a strong force in the community. They've used every marketing and community engagement angle they can think of -- to gather broad support for their new venture.

It will be a while before they run regular movies  -  there's still lots of renovation and fundraising to do  -- but in February they held a fundraising gala, featuring a showing of the new James Bond movie "Skyfall." They invited people to come dressed as James Bond or their favourite Bond character. Freelance contributor Bill Metcalfe was there.
