The Pirates of Penzance sail into Vancouver!

 The Pirates of Penzance

Who doesn't love pirates? And especially when they're singing pirates?

Vancouver Opera is hoping that's the case with its latest production of Gilbert and Sullivan's

'The Pirates of Penzance' opening tonight at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

They've got some pirate heavy-hitters on board the ship, including Christopher Gaze, from

Bard on the Beach, who directs the opera and plays the Major General; and acclaimed

Canadian mezzo-soprano Judith Forst, who sings the role of Ruth, the Pirate Maid.

Pamela Post has this documentary on the merry band of musical misfits - and what gives

Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas their staying power. (click 'read more' to see more photos of the production. All photos by Tim Matheson).
