'That Which Makes Us Haida: the Haida Language' exhibit at Bill Reid Gallery

Mona Jackson

A very dramatic and moving exhibit has just opened at the Bill Reid Gallery in Vancouver.

It's called 'That Which Makes Us Haida: The Haida Language'. It's the culmination of 8 years of work photographing, interviewing and audio-taping the last surviving fluent speakers of the Haida language. There are fewer than 40 elders who learned Haida as their first language - and still speak fluently. Their average age is about 85 - and many died before seeing the exhibit launched. The installation and accompanying book document their heroic efforts to keep the language alive. The exhibit is at the gallery until September.  Pamela Post has a tour of the show.
