Violinist Timothy Chooi

Timothy Chooi was born to play the violin. As a baby, Timmy would fall to sleep to the sound of his older brother Nikki practicing in the same room. When given his first pair of chopsticks he lifted them up to his chin and bowed one with the other!

These days Timothy, now 17 years old, is studying at the world famous Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.  He has won numerous prizes including the Grand Prize in the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal Standard Life Competition.  In 2010 he was awarded the "Special Prize" at the Menhin International Violin Competition, Senior Divison in Oslo, Norway.

The last time I talked to Timothy he was just back from the competition in Norway with an amazing story to tell of his journey to get there in time to perform.  He had been delayed by the eruption of the volcano in Icelang and only arrived, after a marathon bus journey, with moments to spare.

He is back in BC now to be part of the Vancouver Winter Chamber Music Festival taking place Saturday and Sunday evening at CBC.
