Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band

Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band

What a great time I had this week at a rehearsal for the Triumph Street Pipe Band.  I am a big fan of the pipes and love to get to meet the people who are so passionate about making the music. The band is off to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships again in Glasgow this year.  That competition happens on August 11th and you can watch it live streamed.
The band also has a brand new cd titled With Purpose with some fine traditional pipe tunes and some exciting contemporary compositions.

Salt Spring Island Castle!

Bob and Sue Harland's Castle Photo by George Grams
Photos by George Grams

Recently I had a chance to visit a castle on Salt Spring Island!  Well really it's described as a tower house but it's very much like a small scale Scottish castle. It's the home of Bob and Sue Harland and they graciously invited me over to have a look at their beautiful home.  While there I talked to them and to George Grams and to Andrew Curry.

You never know who is going to turn up on North by Northwest!  When I heard that Courtenay Pollock, one of the icons of psychedelic tie dye, was living in Powell River these days and still creating wonderful art, I immediately asked him to be on the show.

He has some great stories about how he became a tie dye artist and how he ended up working with the Grateful Dead for so many years!

Potter Denise Jeffrey

Denise Jeffrey's recent work.

Denise Jeffrey's move from the East coast to the West has had an interesting effect on her pottery.  For one thing the glazes that she uses just look different here, and for another, the decoration she's using on her pots and her larger pieces has switched from a sea theme to a tree theme.  Also bits of topographical maps are showing up on goblets and platters as Denise learns to find her way around a new part of the world.

I had a great visit to Denise's studio and gallery in Burnaby where she's getting ready for a show opening July 27 at Deer Lake Gallery. She invited me out to watch her opening the kiln, which was an event filled with surprise!

You can hear my conversation with Denise on the podcast for Sunday July 22.
