Roy Forbes is known for his own songs and his long musical career but he's also a serious record collector and his "slightly messy basement"is filled to the brim with vinyl and especially with old 78s!   He'll drop by with some Christmas selections from the 78 shelves.  Some unusual versions of some old favourites and some songs you have probably never heard!

Chef Bruce - Christmas Side Dishes

What to serve with the turkey? I don't know about you, but I find the turkey the easy part. It's all the side dishes that can get a bit daunting. Timing them just right especially. With that in mind I had a chat with North by North West's resident chef, Bruce Wood, from Bruce's Kitchen on Salt Spring Island. He's talking Christmas side dishes and he started off with a very simple braised cabbage.

Golden Civic Centre

Golden Civic Centre

It's only a few days now until the great re-opening of the Golden Civic Centre.  The building has a long and storied history in the community and now it has undergone a thorough renovation to emerge as the new performing arts and cultural centre. For months a many local citizens have been working hard to realize this community dream. The celebrations start on December 27.

Bill Usher is the executive director of Kicking Horse Culture in Golden.  I called him to ask how things are going with the project.

Gentlemen of Fortune

A very harmonious group of gentlemen dropped by the studio recently, for a chat and to sing.  They are all members of Gentlemen of Fortune which is an award winning barbershop ensemble in the Vancouver area.  They sang a couple of tunes in Studio 10 and we had a lovely conversation about their love for harmonies.

Mark Perry

It was great to get a chance to see singer and song writer Mark Perry again.  It doesn't happen too often as Mark lives in Smithers, but a new cd from him is always a great reason to get him into the studio for a chat.

The new cd is called West and it's filled with some great songs.  In fact Mark has a note inside the cd cover which says "I feel very good about this group of songs".

It was a real treat to have Anna Olson back in the NXNW Cooking Club.  Anna is host of Fresh on the Food Network and author of six cookbooks.  This latest one, as the name suggests, marks her return to pastry and cream and all things sweet.

For the Cooking Club she made a most delicious trifle, involving apple crisp, butter cream and pecans!!  The recipe is available on the Cooking Club page.

Author D. W. Wilson and Once You Break a Knuckle

David Wilson is on a roll!

First he received the University of East Anglia's first MAN Booker scholarship and then this year became the youngest winner of the coveted BBC Short Story prize.

He won for his story "The Dead Roads" which comes from his newly published debut collection, Once You Break a Knuckle. The book centres around some of the rough and tumble characters of his home town of Invermere, B.C. and it is a rollicking read written in a very distinctive voice.

The Bright Well: Contemporary Canadian Poems about Facing Cancer

Fiona Tinwei Lam has collected the work of a fine group of Canadian poets for this anthology about facing cancer.  The poems deal with their experiences, emotions and thoughts during diagnosis, treatment, and beyond.  I had three of the poets whose work appears in the collection in the studio last week for a conversation and to hear a few poems.  It was a very moving experience for all of us.

There is a reading event with a few of the authors from the collection on Tuesday, December 6 at 7 pm at the Vancouver Public Library Main Branch.

Author Linwood Barclay

We had a great time with author Linwood Barclay in the Studio One Book Club this week. I was introduced to his mysteries and thrillers recently and have since devoured every one of them.  From the first of his stand alone novels No Time For Goodbye to his latest The Accident they are true page turners with strong characters and unpredictable plots.

Linwood Barclay is also a humorist, and that was evident in his comments at the Book Club event.  It was a truly entertaining evening.
