Devolution: the territory's next
challenge
Richard Gleeson | CBC Online News | Nov. 13
Slowly but steadily, the Northwest Territories government is growing up.
It wasn't until 1975 that residents of the territory got their first fully elected government.
Since then, the territorial government's role has grown to include responsibility for health, education, transportation and forestry.
Negotiators are now working out the next big jump ahead, giving northerners control over Crown lands and the resources that lie beneath them.
The Northwest Territories government had hoped to have a devolution deal by now, but it's proven more difficult than expected.
It will be up to the next government to try to reach an agreement.
Devolution is a step the Yukon took last spring, when a negotiated agreement came into effect, giving that territory control over its resources.
CBC Yellowknife Reporter Richard Gleeson travelled to Whitehorse to find out how the transfer is working out there.
