The number of eligible voters who cast a ballot in Nunavut's election Monday was down 10 per cent from 2004, the territory's chief electoral officer says.
About 8,000 voters, or 71 per cent, turned up at the polls to elect MLAs in 15 of the territory's 19 ridings, said Sandy Kusugak in a news release.
Two MLAs won their seats by acclamation and byelections will be held to fill the seats in the other two ridings.
Kusugak said she does not think the weather was a factor in the lower turnout since conditions were good across the territory Monday.
Meanwhile, Kusugak said there will be a recount of ballots in the riding of Uqqummiut where incumbent James Arreak won by only six votes.
Arreak received 218 votes while his nearest rival, Loasie Audlakiak, garnered 212.
The results of the recount should be released within the next two weeks, Kusugak said.
