Riding Profile: Redistributed in 2003, this newly named riding includes 91 per cent of Dartmouth South (losing the area north of Lake Banook and Hawthorne Street to Dartmouth North) and gaining a corner of Cole Harbour-Eastern Passage.

It's a mixed riding that includes the Alderney Landing theatre, library and ferry downtown, as well as residential areas such as Woodside, Southdale and Portland Estates.

Several new condominium and multi-unit housing developments in the last few years have revitalized this area. It's also benefited from fabrication work tied to offshore rigs and construction.

The population is 21,220 and the average income is $28,720.

 

Issues: Education and pocketbook issues such as insurance and higher user fees are also issues in this riding.

 

Political History: This riding, which was represented by former premier John Savage, has mainly switched back and forth between Liberal and PC candidates since 1970, and the results are often close. The NDP won it in 1998 and in 2003.

2003: NDP Marilyn More received 43 per cent of the vote to defeat incumbent PC Tim Olive by 1,031 votes. LIB Colin A. MacEachern came in third with 25 per cent.
1999: PC Tim Olive defeats NDP Don Chard by 645 votes. LIB Audrey Goodyear was third.
1998: NDP Don Chard defeats LIB Bruce Hetherington by 512 votes.
1993: LIB John Savage defeats PC Colin May by 1,255 votes.

Voter Turnout: 60 per cent in 2003.
