July 31, 10:41 a.m. - Opinion

I am tired of hearing the NDP use a tuition freeze to gain students' votes and it especially angers me because they do not prominently say that it is for only ONE YEAR that they have the plan to do so (if elected).

Only the Liberals have addressed access to post-secondary education in this province with the 5,000 $1,000 grants awarded to students with the most need. The NDP and Tories have only focused on the student debt-relief program, which is available to students only after the fact (need). To put it into perspective, if student A cannot afford the $200 increase on tuition this year (5% on average), nor could they afford the $4,000 then how is a tuition freeze going to help them??

July 31, 2:43 p.m. - Post Secondary Education

I just read a piece on your site on the contest in Halifax Citadel and I wanted to take the opportunity to draw your attention to an awareness campaign being run in the Halifax Citadel riding by students at the two largest universities in the riding, Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University. The campaign is called Post Secondary Education Matters and is a non-partisan initiative designed to raise the profile of post-secondary education in the provincial election. The campaign has been by all accounts successful and includes lawn signs, radio spots, newspaper ads, flyers, posters, a billboard and a Web site. You can check it out at www.PSEmatters.ca
