July 13, 12:02 p.m. – Opinion My vote will not be blue or red as both parties have exhibited a total disregard for environmental issues to date. The Tory Green Plan was only introducedas an attempt to satisfy those thousands of Nova Scotians who volunteer their time to try and save portions of the provincefrom the wood harvester or the developer’s bulldozer. If the election had not been called until next year, then the Green Plan would only have been releasedat that time. The Tory party has shown total disregard for the wishes of community-based volunteer groups and has failed to represent the interests of environmentalists in the province. Thered party is perhaps even worse than the blue party. I attempted to set up a meeting with them on several occasions and they are so arrogant that they do not respond to my e-mails. One would think that the leader of the red party would at least demonstrate common courtesy by responding even if a meeting were not possible. I am also dismayed that the red party, even under novice leadership, would not want to capitalize on the dismal record of the Tories on this issue. The fact that they have not seized the moment leads me to conclude that environmental issues have no serious place on their agenda. The orange party has demonstrated a real interest in environmental issues and appears committed to recognizing the work and efforts of community-based organizations. The willingness to listen andunderstand that these community-based volunteer organizations are working for the public good, with no self-interest, hold the orange party heads and shoulders above the rest. There is no doubt as to where my vote will be cast in this election. - Wayne N. Rogers
July 13, 4:09 p.m. – First time voting This is going to be my very firstprovincial election, and after looking at what each party promises I don’t know who to vote for. One main topic is car insurance, but for me that’s not an issue, I bike. Though I do like the idea of more doctors, but we need doctors who will not be sitting on their butts all day. I have heard that in some hospitals the doctor will be there chatting away with other doctors about golf or something and there’s three to five people sitting in the waiting area, and they are there for a couple of hours. Then with this Sunday shopping, let stores decide if they want to be open on Sundays. Me personally I like it the way it is. Oh well won't know who I'll vote for until August 5th. - Samuel M. Clark
July 13, 7:46 p.m. - Sunday shopping Sunday shopping I feel is an important issue to Nova Scotians especially to the retail staff of this province. We are upset that the Liberals and the NDP support Sunday shopping year around. Whereas the Tories will allow Sunday shopping as a trial run before Christmas and a plebiscite to follow in 2004. I'm supporting the Tories for the reason that they will give us more choice than the other parties are willing to offer. However we do not feel if a plebiscite is to be held the question should not only pertain to retail, but should include government offices, municipal offices, banks and so on. "Would you like government offices, municipal offices, banks, retail stores open on Sunday?" YES OR NO? Another important issue is workers’ protection. In Ontario retail workers are protected from working on Sunday and holidays. We are asking Nova Scotians to consider those that were not hired to work on Sunday. Please support the Tories giving us a choice that the other parties are not willing to provide. - Tony Lohnes
