July 12, 2:49 p.m. - An issue that should have made it to the platforms Nearly all Nova Scotians understand the rather simple promises of increased comfort and money-saving that come before an election. Fewer of us know that the full responsibility for the wise use and protection of our natural resources rests almost entirely with the provincial government. Maybe this is why no issues relating to the wise use of our forests have made it to election platforms. Many of us agree that there is something inherently wrong with indiscriminately clear cutting forests faster than they are growing. The good news is that our provincial government could do something to promote better forestry, but that wouldn't happen unless it became an election issue. So, out of fear of making confusing promises, all of the leaders have excluded forest issues from the election campaign. Are there really no issues relating to maintaining the long-term well-being of our forests? Or do the NDP or Liberals believe that the indiscriminant clearcutting of our forests -- now being promoted by the Tory government -- must end? - DeLancey Bishop
