Current MLA: Jon Carey (PC)

Riding Profile: Kings West includes the town of Berwick in the north and Aylesford and Greenwood in the south. This area of Kings County has undergone a period of economic growth recently with an expansion at CFB Greenwood and a new Superstore for Kingston. Michelin is also planning another expansion at the tire plant in Waterville.

The largest employers are the Annapolis Valley school board, Avon & Graves Foods and Eassons Transport.

The population is 20,970 and the average income is $23,743. Educational levels are slightly higher than the provincial average and the unemployment rate is lower--at less than eight per cent.

 

 

Issues: Saving the family farm, car insurance, secondary roads, family doctors.

 
 


Political History: Kings West has been a PC stronghold for 25 years. In 1993, it lost part of its territory to Kings North and Kings South. Berwick's George Moody represented the area in the N.S. legislature for 20 years.

1999: PC Jon Carey received 4,033 votes to defeat LIB Don Clarke with 2,346 votes. NDP Jacquie DeMestral received 1,629 and NSP Frances Adams got 166. The Tories took 49 per cent of the popular vote..

Voter Turnout: 60 per cent.
